Q: What’s your name?
A: Brandon Chinn
Q: Do you really like cows? What’s with this blog’s name?
A: I had an entrepreneurship professor, Danny Warshay, assign Seth Godin’s book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable, and it changed the way I thought about marketing and products that speak for themselves. I think as MBA students there’s a lot of value in standing out as a ‘Purple Cow’ in class and in career opportunities. We’re at UVA though so we’ll have to go with orange over purple.
Q: Where you were you before Charlottesville?
A: I grew up in a suburb outside of Richmond, VA called Midlothian. I then headed to Brown University for college in the wonderfully weird Providence, RI. After that I spent a year in Louisville, KY, and then three years in New York City. It’s good to be back in Virginia.
Q: It’s good to have you back. Coffee or tea?
A: Coffee, but not after 2:00 PM or I won’t sleep.
Q: What really makes your palms sweat?
A: Besides coffee? Heights. I bungee jumped once, and have been terrified ever since.
Q: What can you not live without?
A: Chinese take out.
Q: What’s your biggest flaw?
A: I lose at least one personal item every time travel. Usually it’s just a water bottle, but occasionally it’s a Kindle. Whoops!
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
A: I have an uncanny ability to change song lyrics...on accident. For example the new Daft Punk song…
We’ve come so far to tell you who we are
So let’s hit the bar and go look at the stars
She’s up all night like the sun
I’m up all night to get some
She’s up all night for long runs
I’m up all night to get lucky
I think Pharrell could learn a thing or two from me. That’s all I’m saying. Who doesn’t like bars with sky views and girls who like to go for long runs? Also the sun IS up all night, you just can’t see it.
Q: What were you up to before Darden?
A: I worked at ZocDoc.com implementing internet marketing solutions for big hospitals and enterprise clients. I got really good at helping tech-adverse people use their computers/the internet. I showed an office manager how to increase the font on her Internet Explorer once. She said, “I could kiss you!” Debbie if you’re reading this, I’m holding you to that.
Q: What are your plans after Darden?
A: I’m hoping to find a brand management internship for this summer. I’d also like to get ZocDoc down here in Charlottesville so I can book some doctors appointments for myself. Beyond that, I’ll have to keep you posted.
Q: Sounds good. Where should I look out for those posts?
A: Follow me at dardensorangecow.tumblr.com . No really! Do it! Scroll up. Click the '+ Follow' button. Debbie if you're reading this call me. I'll walk you through it.
